As a wealthy Swedish family celebrates the birthday of their patriarch (Erland Josephson, graves and whiskers), III. News about the outbreak of World War II get to their distant Baltic Island – and the happy mood becomes horror. The family descends into a state of psychological destruction, which brilliantly causes Tarkovsky’s arresting bright gray palette washed over the dark landscape around their house. (The film’s master cinematographer was made by Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman, a long -standing cooperative). Alexander, a philosopher that is disturbing because of the lack of spirituality, forced the final sacrifice and, with God, a faustian bargain to save his loved ones from the fear that grabs them. The director’s last film, dying in cancer, is the victim’s personal statement, a deep -moving, redeeming tragedy that arises in unforgettable images and emotions leading to the heart.
